A research team from the University of California, San Diego is set to begin human trials on eye drops that have been shown to shrink and dissolve cataracts in both model and animal subjects. The medication is based on lanosterol, a naturally occurring steroid that is believed to help prevent crystalline proteins from clumping together and forming non-congenital cataracts. Inadequate lanosterol production has been identified as a cause of congenital cataracts in several studies.
The Northeastern Pennsylvania cataract surgeons at our offices are dedicated to providing our patients with the safest and most effective treatment options. The prospect of eye drops that can dissolve cataracts is exciting, but efficacy and long-term impacts have yet to be established. Available now are advanced cataract surgery technology and techniques that have been proven to safely eliminate this common cause of blindness and even enhance overall visual acuity.
